- Michigan mint is harvested from late June to mid-September. Windrowers are used to mow the mint fields leaving a mounded row of “hay” or cut mint.
- The mint dries in the field for one to two days, and is then chopped with a forge chopper and blown into wagons.
- The wagons are then taken to the distillation facility where the essential oils are extracted by steam distillation.
- After the essential oils are extracted the cooked hay is spread out over the cut fields.
